Advent at Salzkammergut
An unforgettable experience in the Salzkammergut during the Advent season (on 2018 from November 24th to December 21st) where to visit:
St. Gilgen: the Baroque Advent Celebration
The houses and streets of St. Gilgen are enchantingly decorated with hundreds of coppery, golden Advent Candles. The lovingly decorated stalls painted in the baroque style by the artist Raja Schwahn Reichmann are alone worth a visit as the stalls’ front facades show colourful Advent scenes. The painted figures of people, angels and animals are all inspired by brightly coloured, three dimensional baroque wall and ceiling paintings and each one keeps revealing new, delightful details to the onlooker. The illuminated path takes you on a biblical journey from the ‘annunciation’ to the ‘flight to Egypt’.
Strobl am Wolfgangsee: The Nativity Village
At Christmas, this idyllic village on Lake Wolfgangsee turns into a romantic nativity village and, as you enter Strobl, a shepherds path takes you to a giant Advent gate. 30 stalls with real wooden tiled roofs take you on a journey through time into the Advent of yesterday. The atmospheric and lovingly decorated stands offer local culinary delicacies as well as handicrafts and many different gift ideas. Observe wild animals right in the middle of this nativity village and get up close to stags and their young.
St. Wolfgang: the Romantic Advent Village
The Christ child is eagerly awaited here and fascinating living traditions encourage visitors to while away their time. The many things going on, together with the singing angels of Lake Wolfgangsee, all help bring about the Christmas spirit. The Advent market is open from Monday through to Friday. On Wednesdays the Advent festivities in St. Wolfgang are held by candle light, and only by candle light. All electric lights in the Advent market are extinguished, and all the shops and businesses are illuminated by lanterns. Watch master craftsmen and women at work making vintage handicrafts.

Salzkammergut: real paradise for nature lovers
The Salzkammergut region is a real paradise for nature lovers and for those who, like me, want to discover places that are still genuine and not influenced by mass tourism. Do you know the beautiful Austrian lakes that you often see on brochures or travel magazines? Here, the Lake of Attersee is certainly one of these lakes. An instagram lake, surrounded by mountains and hills, with a relaxed and sly atmosphere.
The best way to enjoy this lake is to take one of the boats that regularly depart from the village of Attersee. This is not a common boat and has nothing to do with the ferries you are used to, but it is a small floating bar, with huge windows to enjoy the view while you sip a beer or an aperitif, maybe accompanied by a strictly local snack. Upstairs, outdoors, you can enjoy even more the view, going from one side of the lake to the other, relaxing and breathing the pure and genuine air of these land.
While you are on holiday on Lake Attersee, I recommend a visit to the Honey Farm Bienenhof Attersee: if you have time, I recommend a guided tour, where you can understand and learn more about the world of bees and the products that are produced with the honey and its derivatives, like wax.
Always at the Bienenhof Attersee there is also a nature trail with 30 stations where the world of bees is explained in detail, in a simple but informative way, surrounded by green fields and the Attersee lake in the background. On this path you also have the opportunity to see even a real beehive: a special structure with a front glass, allows you to admire the bees while they are at work. The path is free and you can follow it as you wish. A beautiful experience visiting this honey farm, especially for children, who can come into direct contact with the bees and understand their world and their mechanisms, in an interactive way thath is not boring at all. Inside the property, it is possible to buy products based on honey, but also with wax like candles and other organic products.
The beautiful lakes of Austria
Images of intense blue lakes and beautiful green and white mountains are some of the first things that come to mind when one thinks of Austria; without forgotting the cultural appealing of its cities and the relaxing atmosphere of its towns. The best places to relax in Austria tend to be close to the beautiful lakes of the country, many of which are systematically grouped in the Salzkammergut region; the Lake District to the east of Salzburg. The towns surrounding the lakes have an incredibly distinctive charm and have unique and exciting stories and I cannot avoid sharing them with you.
Understandably within anyone’s travel bucket list, Hallstatt is a UNESCO heritage site with such international appeal that China’s tourism office built a 1:1 scale replica in the central province of Henan. The original village of Hallstatt has attracted much interest in East Asia since its use as a backdrop in the Korean drama “Spring Waltz”, and it is not difficult to understand why it was chosen to play this role. Hallstatt has on one side steep mountains and in the other side the Lake Hallstatt; The various buildings overlooking the lake make Hallstatt one of the most instagram-photogenic places in Austria.
The village is perhaps the brightest jewel in the crown of the Salzkammergut region. The oldest town in Austria, Hallstatt is not only famous for its natural and artificial beauties, but also for its three millennia of old salt mining operations. The surrounding mountains are steeped in a salty history that can be explored by a cable car that ends on a viewing platform from which the glorious Alpine beauty of the Salzkammergut opens itself to your eyes.
A glance in a north-western direction will reveal the green and vibrant hills surrounding Lake Wolfgang and at their feet, the pretty town of St. Wolfgang. The Stadtpfarrkirche (church) stands proudly in the middle of the city with the numerous shops and houses that run along the lakeside promenade. The SchafbernBahn railway offers gorgeous views of the peaks and canals of the numerous mountains around the turquoise waters of the lake and, while the steepest railway in the country, contains several moments of gradual ascension as it winds through tall pines and perfect green pastures of historic farmland of the Wolfgang lake.
Special City Guide: St. Wolfgang
In the mountains of the Salzkammergut, the Wolfgangsee is one of the most romantic lakes in Austria. St. Wolfgang, a little holiday resort on the northeastern side of the lake below the Schafberg, is set among all this natural beauty. In summer, the resort is overrun with visitors.
Since the 12th century, long before it was a vacation resort, St. Wolfgang was a renowned pilgrimage center. This church is said to stand on the same rocky spur of land above the lake where St. Wolfgang built a hermitage. The church contains a magnificent Michael Pacher altarpiece (1481), pictured in many Gothic art books. Pacher’s altarpiece is luxuriantly adorned with panel paintings and masterfully carved figures. The main panel depicts the Coronation of the Virgin.
