Our Special Readings

Bijagua: an unknown gem of Costa Rica

Bijagua is located in a valley just 45 minutes from Cañas Guanacaste, but it belongs to Alajuela Province. Bijagua is a small mountain town between the Miravalles Volcano and the Tenorio Volcano that is home to tropical animal species like pumas, tapirs, sloths, anteaters, coatis, giant butterflies and rare plant species, like the wild orchids. Bijagua is a birdwatchers paradise, the forests here provide critical habitat to squawking green parrots, macaws, humming birds and toucans. It is known for its history of cheese making and promising ecological adventures.

This rural village is probably best known as a stop-over destination for those visiting the nearby Rio Celeste Waterfall. And while the famously blue waterfall is quickly becoming a must-see attraction, the town itself remains peaceful and undeveloped.

Hanging Bridges at Heliconias Lodge

Heliconias Lodge is an small ecolodge located in a rainforest adjacent to the Tenorio National Park, their trails winds through the rainforest and features three hanging bridges for spectacular views at canopy level. The forest provides home to a wide range of flora and fauna including numerous rare bird species such as the tody mot mot, rufous vented ground cuckoo, white hawk and ant-trushes and endemic plant species such as the jicaro danto.

Rio Celeste

Rio Celeste is located in the Volcano Tenorio National Park. The trail is about 7km in total and includes an impressive waterfall, blue lagoon, bubbling hot pools and the Teñideros” where the river takes its blue color from merging with a small creek. This is a bright blue river named after the color of its water caused by dissolved minerals at the confluence of two small rivers. The colour of the river can change after high amounts of rainfall due to sediments carried in the river, however after several hours of dry weather the river’s colour can be restored to its remarkable blue colour.
