Khao Lak

For your Thai relax choose Khao Lak

If Phuket welcomes you with the Thai nightlife with overwhelming entertainment, Khao Lak is waiting for you to relax and take care of your soul. Because, perhaps, heaven is here. Pristine forests and wonderful beaches overlooking the seas; moreover, the coral reef of the Indian ocean, a forbidden dream of divers from all over the world. Definitely a place ideal for a relaxing and peaceful holiday.

Khao Lak is a 20 km long strip of amazing coastal towns in the province of Phang Nga, 100 kilometers north of Phuket. Beaches and mountains covered with jungle, many hotels and many resorts. After the tragedy of the 2004 tsunami, it made an impressive recovery and is now again one of the capitals of world tourism. And if Phuket is lively and crowded, Khao Lak offers peace and tranquility, nature and spirituality. All in a natural paradise of enchanting parks, mountains,  beaches and unspoiled nature. And in the evening the options are walks through the markets to buy some souvenirs, taste a delicious fish skewers roasted in the street or watch a small shows set up on the beach.

Many possible excursions are available, let’s see them specifically:

Lampi Waterfall

In the southern area the Lampi Waterfall is worth mentioning, half an hour south of Khao Lak. A magnificent waterfall that deserves a visit in the early hours of the morning, when the sun rises behind the mountains and the rays shine in the water vapor. There is a shop on site where you can buy souvenirs and drinks. It is possible to bathe and be swept away by the jet of water. The Ton Chong Fah Waterfall (also to the south) and the Rainbow Waterfall (to the north) are also beautiful.

Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park

The naturalistic heart of Khao Lak is the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. You can’t miss it. It is a paradise made of cliffs, hills, beaches and valleys covered with forests. Without forgetting other waterfalls and caves, coconut trees, banana trees and rubber plantations. From the visitor center a route of about 3 km starts which leads to the secluded beach of Kat Lek (small beach).

Khlong Thap Liang

Another excursion is at the Khlong Thap Liang estuary where you can meet groups of macaques and gibbons that inhabit forests and mangroves.

Khao Sok National Park

I recommend a further excursion that will leave you breathless, at Khao Sok National Park, located between the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand. This is also a fantastic place and a famous tourist destination. Covered by an ancient evergreen rainforest, along limestone mountains, between deep valleys, blue lakes, mysterious caves and populated by rare animals. Here you can hike from jungle trekking to canoeing on the river. Do not miss a visit on the Cheow Lan Lake, an artificial lake of 165 square kilometers born thanks to the construction of a dam. Here the landscape is truly breathtaking. The boats move between rocks emerging from the water even up to 900 meters, covered by trees and mangroves; moreover, thanks to the fog that surrounds the mountains the place almost fades into the surreal.

Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is a couple of hours’ drive from Khao Lak. Where immersed between limestone islets and sea gypsy villages there is the island of Khao Phing Kan renamed James Bond Island for having set up a 007 film. An island of amazing beauty: a vertical cone inverted base. All around, shallow green waters.

Khao Lak Beaches

The main one is Ao Thong Beach, a white beach on the north east coast of Thailand. It is a quiet beach with a bronze-colored beach in front of the warm and crystal clear waters of the Andaman sea.

Then there is Nang Thong, a beach with a well-equipped tourist center, where most of the hotels and resorts of Khao Lak are located.

Pak Weep Beach

Then 17 kilometers from Nang Thong Beach there is Pak Weep Beach, a natural beach for a relaxing holiday. Suitable for your rest, 4 kilometers further north is also Bang Sak Beach.

Similan & Surin Islands

Similan Island

The Similan and Surin islands are magnificent: a paradise for divers and pearls of the Thai coral reef. Similan means precisely nine, by the number of granite islands surrounded by the blue sea. A national park and one of the most beautiful dive sites in the world. The variety of marine fauna is vast and then corals, gorgonians and fan. The best way to visit them is by boat cruise. But remember that three islands are off limits because the turtles lay their eggs.

Takua Pa

If you want to appreciate the typical dishes and the authentic Thai atmosphere, don’t miss the old town of Takua Pa and the characteristic quarter of Sino-Portuguese architecture where you can walk among characteristic little shops and little restaurants on the river.
