When to go?

Although most Europeans choose to vacation in the Maldives during Europe’s winter months, the scenic Maldive islands are a year-round destination. Any time of the year is basically ideal for visiting these picturesque islands. The best time to visit Maldives often depends on your plans. Surfing and diving, for example, are better during certain months. The Maldives has a tropical climate and experiences dry and wet seasons during the year. The dry season lasts from approximately mid-December to mid-April, while the wet season takes place generally between May to November. April is usually a transition period with hot temperatures and the clearest waters. The dry season features little rain and less humidity, offering travellers from colder climates a tantalising escape. With gentler seas and the best visibility, these months also make for perfect conditions when snorkelling or diving. Although diving is possible throughout the year, aim to reach dive spots on western sides of any atoll from May to November or between December and April on eastern sides. Storms and rain are more likely between May and November. Although still warm, the period is characterized with cloudier skies and much higher humidity. With rougher seas, the wet season is also the best time to visit for surfing enthusiasts. March to October is a great time for surfing in the Maldives.

Maldives: why not?!?

What could be more tranquil than a beach surrounded entirely by crystal clear, blue water? Maldives, an island cluster consisting of thousands of tropical isles, is known for its premier diving, coral reefs and bespoke resorts. The water is so clear in fact, that swimmers can see any of the 1.000 species of fish from over 50 mt away. The ideal time to visit is during the dry season from November to April when average temperatures stay between 25-28 degrees Celsius. With nothing but the vast Indian Ocean in the distance, it is the perfect locale for a relaxing, exotic getaway.

The people of Maldives have fought for freedom from the Dutch, British and even leaders they elected themselves. Through all of this, tourism remains Maldives’ largest industry. Travel in Maldives often includes time relaxing on the local beaches. These tropical islands have plenty of sunshine and high temperatures year round, and have islands dedicated strictly to tourists traveling to Maldives. Whether you long for pampered nights in a 5-star resort or fish-filled days some 24 mt underwater, your tropical wishes are sure to come true on one of the 87 resort islands of the Maldives. Straddling the equator, the 1.102 islands that make up the Maldives form 26 atolls, or rings, of coral scattered over an area of land 820 km long and 120 km wide. The air of tranquility enveloping the archipelago makes the Maldives the ideal place to escape from the real world to a palm-fringed haze.

Special City Guide: Maldives

The Maldives are scattered across 806 km of Indian Ocean. Their pure white sands are fringed with green palms and surrounded by some of the clearest water in the world. Coral reefs and tropical fish, from neon clownfish to slow-moving manta rays, thrive in the warm ocean water. Sunset catamaran cruises are de rigueur, as are picnics on uninhabited islands, and decadent Spa treatments. Secluded resorts on far-flung private islands are within an hour’s boat or floatplane ride from the bustling capital and a world away from everyday life.

No Maldivian resort is complete without its own stretch of private beach and resort size determines how crowded beaches can be in the December-to-April high season. Cocoa Island, in the South Malé Atoll, is delightfully uncrowded as there are just 36 rooms at the resort here. The shallow lagoon is well-suited to snorkeling and kayaking. Ideal for children are the pristine, manmade beaches at One&Only Reethi Rah, carved into small, safe bays with bath-like shallows.

As an island nation, the Maldives are best known for bountiful fresh seafood. Red snapper and char-grilled king prawns taste all the better when enjoyed on a candle-lit private beach or in an intimate dining room built over the glimmering ocean. Local specialties are creamy and spicy curries, such as miruhulee boav, octopus, chili, and curry leaves served with rice.
