The culture of cigars

The shopping in Punta Cana is not exactly what brings the tourists in, but that being said, it is still something that every traveler can add to list of things to do. The Punta Cana shops are surely growing in number as more and more tourists flock to the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic. In recent years, a new shopping village has opened in Punta Cana, and it’s helping to meet the needs of tourists who are looking to shop. Most of these resorts offer shops of their own, so when you find yourself with some down time at your respective resort, you can always peruse the goods like cigars. If you stick to the resorts when shopping in Punta Cana, you’ll likely find enough in the way of variety to make for an interesting experience. In addition to small grocery stores, the stores at the resorts typically sell souvenirs, clothing items, beach-related goods, and jewelry. It’s also common to be able to buy handicrafts and other locally made products at some of the resorts, including cigars.

Dominican cigars are some of the finest rolled anywhere. Popular brands such as Ashton, La Aurora, Macanudo and Montecristo are all known for the tobacco flavor that is derived from their Dominican cigars, and this is only to name a few. Many of the world’s leading producers and manufacturers of fine smokes rely on tobacco from this region because it is considered among the best in the world by aficionados everywhere. Speaking of cigars, the Dominican Republic produces more of them than any other country in the world, including Cuba. One of the best-known brands of cigar is Romeo y Julieta.

Tabacalera de García

With over 130 years of heritage, Romeo y Julieta, named after Shakespeare’s literary masterpiece, is one of the world’s most iconic cigar brands. Created in Cuba in 1875, Romeo y Julieta cigars became incredibly famous in the 20th century; even Winston Churchill, after visiting Havana in 1946, became an avowed fan and, in return, one of the brand’s sizes was named in his honor. After the Cuban embargo, production of Romeo y Julieta cigars moved to the Dominican Republic, where the medium-bodied cigars are more popular than ever and sought after for their flavor, construction, and consistency. Today, the majority of Romeo y Julieta cigars are hand made at the renowned Tabacalera de García factory.

That said, it is important to specify that now everyone will find a lot of vendors that sell cigars in their stores, on the beach or on the streets of Punta Cana. The bad news is that cigars sold by these vendors are almost always fake! There is a lot of money and corruption in counterfeit cigars. The problem with fake cigars is, that not only do they taste awful. They can contain worms that will distroy your entire cigar collection should you make the mistake of bringing them back home. So be very careful as there are a lot of fakes out there; many are second-quality made from scraps and sweepings. Buying your cigars from reputable retailers, not on the beach, not in the street, not in someone’s home, is step one to getting a genuine cigar.
